A contributor sent in this evocative view of the shed
below, by an unknown photographer, on a
beautiful sunny spring day in May 1963. It portrays
a mix of engines that the shed often housed.
A view from 1963 showing the modern structure, with a
selection of British Railways Standard Class 2 tanks ready
for service. The carriage shed roof, then in good
condition, can be seen in the background. (Norman Kneale)
A 1964 view by Harold Bowtell. 3442 worked a special from
Leeds to Llandudno on May 10th 1964 and is seen here
arriving at 6G for servicing before returning to Leeds.

This view shows how primitive steam locomotive servicing
was in the 1960s. The difficulties in staff recruitment
and retaining them when better conditions and wages were
to be had in manufacturing industry is all too apparent.
47507 stands by the coaling stage at Chester (6A) in this
undated photo (photographer unknown). 47507 was built at
Vulcan foundry as LMS 7507 in 1928. Twenty years later, at
nationalisation, it was a Birkenhead (6C) locomotive but
the early 1960s it saw a move first to Rhyl (6K) in April
1962 and then to Llandudno Junction in February 1963. It
moved eastwards in September 1966 to Chester (6A), but
only for a short while. By December that year, Cashmores
at Great Bridge had reduced the 38 year-old locomotive to
scrap.
