Please excuse this 'cheeky link', which takes you to my business website where I tune and repair pianos.

DIESEL DAYS - When steam had virtually disappeared, the diesels had their day.

Britannia class 70026 "Polar Star"undergoes cylinder maintenance at 6G shed in the early sixties.   The shed was opened  in 1899 by the L.N.W.R. The original code, 7A, was changed in 1952 to 6G and remained until closure 3rd October 1966. The carriage shed remained until 2000 and became the "new" shed for diesel locos and re-coded LJ.

Left: Looking across from  Ffordd 6G, in 1999, at the sad site of the neglected carriage shed. The site was cleared only a few months after this photo was taken and the whole story became just a memory. Right: how the site looks today, taken from a similar position to the one opposite.

This is a view of the entrance to the carriage shed just before demolition. At this stage the 'keep out' and 'danger' signs were apparent due to the dangerous state of the glass roof.

Today a multiplex cinema complex stands on the site of the carriage shed and the new "Ffordd 6G"  (Road 6G) has swallowed up the site of the steam shed and sidings.

A contributor sent in this evocative view of the shed below, by an unknown photographer, on a
beautiful sunny spring day in May 1963. It portrays a mix of engines that the shed often housed.

A view from 1963 showing the modern structure, with a selection of British Railways Standard Class 2 tanks ready for service. The carriage shed roof, then in good condition, can be seen in the background. (Norman Kneale)

A 1964 view by Harold Bowtell. 3442 worked a special from Leeds to Llandudno on May 10th 1964 and is seen here arriving at 6G for servicing before returning to Leeds. Thanks to Ian Cook for this detail.

This rare undated view of the back of 6G, by Patrick Hargreaves, shows a very busy depot with a varied selection of engines.

This view shows how primitive steam locomotive servicing was in the 1960s. The difficulties in staff recruitment and retaining them when better conditions and wages were to be had in manufacturing industry is all too apparent.

47507 stands by the coaling stage at Chester (6A) in this undated photo (photographer unknown). 47507 was built at Vulcan foundry as LMS 7507 in 1928. Twenty years later, at nationalisation, it was a Birkenhead (6C) locomotive but the early 1960s it saw a move first to Rhyl (6K) in April 1962 and then to Llandudno Junction in February 1963. It moved eastwards in September 1966 to Chester (6A), but only for a short while. By December that year, Cashmores at Great Bridge had reduced the 38 year-old locomotive to scrap.
